Frequently Asked Questions

How do we calculate up to 70% of your electricity?2025-01-21T14:43:07+00:00

This is based on 10x400W panels on a south facing, 35 degree pitched roof in London with 2% annual shade as well as a 5kWh battery storage solution. Using MCS standard this would generate 3528kWh per year. Taking a typical household which is home most of the day using 2900kWh per year, our bespoke systems could provide 70% of the energy your property needs.

How does solar PV work?2025-01-21T14:46:25+00:00

Solar PV (Photovoltaic) works by transforming sunlight into electricity in a simple and environmentally friendly way. When sunlight hits the solar panels installed on your roof or in a sunny area, the panels convert this sunlight into direct current (DC) electricity. The DC electricity is then sent to an inverter, which converts it into alternating current (AC) electricity—the type of electricity used to power your home. This clean, renewable energy can be used to run your appliances, lights, and other devices, reducing your reliance on traditional fossil fuels and helping you save money on your energy bills. Plus, any excess electricity your solar panels generate can be fed back into the grid, earning you money from your utility company. So, by going solar, you not only contribute to a greener planet but also gain more control over your energy usage and costs.

When installing Solar PV what is the best roof location?2025-01-21T14:47:08+00:00

When installing solar PV panels, the best roof location is one that maximises the amount of sunlight the panels receive throughout the day. Here are some factors to consider when determining the optimal roof location for solar panel installation:

Orientation and Tilt: The ideal orientation for solar panels is facing south, as it receives the most sunlight over the course of a day. Different roof pitches and materials can affect the installation and efficiency of solar panels. Generally, roofs with a pitch between 15 to 40 degrees are ideal for solar installations. On roofs that aren’t steep (15-20 degrees), and that don’t exceed 10 degrees to the north from perfect east or perfect west, then solar is possibly a viable option, however the panels will generate less energy than if they were facing south. As for roof materials, the most straightforward installations are typically on concrete, clay and slate tiles.

Shading: It’s essential to place the solar panels in a location with minimal shading. Even partial shading on just a few solar cells can significantly reduce the overall energy output of the entire system. Shading can come from nearby trees, buildings, chimneys, or other obstructions. Conducting a shading analysis before installation can help identify potential issues.

Structural Integrity: The roof must be structurally sound enough to support the weight of our solar panels. If there are any concerns about the roof’s integrity, a professional structural assessment should be carried out before installation.

Local Climate: The local climate plays a role in determining the optimal roof location. Areas with more sunlight throughout the year will generally yield better results for solar energy production.

Aesthetics: While aesthetics may not directly affect the performance of the solar panels, they can be a consideration for some homeowners. Placing the panels on less visible areas of the roof or using solar tiles that blend in with the roof can be options to maintain a pleasing appearance.

Local Regulations: Be aware of any local regulations, homeowner association rules, or building codes that may dictate where solar panels can be installed on the roof.

In summary, the best roof location for solar PV installation is typically one that faces south with minimal shading and a suitable roof pitch and material. Our technical advisors can help assess your specific roof and location to determine the best setup for your solar PV system.

Why is Battery storage so important?2025-01-21T14:43:32+00:00

Battery storage is important with solar PV systems in the UK for several reasons. Firstly, it allows surplus solar energy to be stored for later use during periods of low solar generation, optimising self-consumption and reducing grid reliance. This improves energy resilience, ensuring a consistent electricity supply even in adverse weather. Additionally, battery storage maximises the return on investment for solar PV installations, as it enables users to offset more of their electricity costs and potentially shorten the payback period. Moreover, it contributes to grid stabilisation by balancing supply and demand, supports the integration of renewable energy sources, and offers environmental benefits by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and reliance on fossil fuel-based power plants.

How much roof space do I need?2025-01-21T14:46:03+00:00

Most home owners purchase between 2 kW to 6 kW systems. A typical 4 kWp system requires approximately 20m2 roof space. There are different sizes and different shapes of panels and they do not have to be altogether. Therefore, most roofs are large enough to support your needs.

Do I need planning permission?2025-01-21T14:47:43+00:00

In England most solar electricity systems don’t need any planning permission. However we will consult your local planning office if you live in a Listed Building, a Conservation Area or in a World Heritage Area.

What is MCS?2025-01-21T14:45:43+00:00

MCS is a standards organisation.

Working with the industry, MCS defines, maintains and improves quality by certifying low-carbon energy technologies and contractors – including heat pumps, solar PV, biomass, wind and battery storage.

MCS aims to decarbonise heat and power in the UK’s home by giving you confidence in home-grown energy.

What is Smart Export Guarantee (SEG)?2025-01-21T14:44:14+00:00

If you generate renewable electricity in your home or business, you can feed back into the grid any electricity that you don’t use. Under the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) you will be paid for every unit of electricity that you feed back. You won’t be paid for any that you use yourself. Check out the process for applying here

How long will it take to complete my installation?2025-01-21T14:43:51+00:00

In most cases, even for larger jobs that include the installation of a home energy storage battery, the installation takes no longer than a day to complete. If an unforeseen disruption were to take place causing a delay in the installation, it still shouldn’t take longer than two days. Scaffolding is typically erected 24-72 hours before the arrival of the installation team with the scaffolding usually removed 24-72 hours after installation

What are the maintenance requirements for Solar panels?2025-01-21T14:45:19+00:00

What are the maintenance requirements for Solar panels?

Solar PV panels are relatively low-maintenance devices, but regular upkeep is necessary to ensure they continue to operate efficiently and have a long lifespan. Proper maintenance helps maximise energy production and protects your investment. Here are some essential maintenance tasks for solar PV panels:

Regular Cleaning: Dust, dirt, leaves, bird droppings, and other debris can accumulate on the surface of the solar panels over time, reducing their efficiency. Cleaning the panels periodically, especially in areas with little rainfall, is crucial. Use a soft brush or a gentle stream of water to remove debris. Avoid abrasive materials or high-pressure washers that could damage the panel surface.

Monitor Performance: Keep track of the system’s performance regularly. Our solar solutions are equipped with monitoring apps that allow you to check the energy production and detect any significant drops in output, which could indicate an issue that needs attention.

What length of warranties should I expect?2025-01-21T14:42:00+00:00

Our panels carry a 25 year performance warranty and 25 year product warranty. Both the inverter and our Fox Battery Storage solutions come with a full 10 year warranty from the date of installation. Through our trusted installation partner they will provide a 2 year workmanship warranty that is insurance backed by IWA, which includes full deposit protection.

How do I go about insuring my Solar Panels?2025-01-21T14:44:35+00:00

Most home insurance policies already include cover for solar panel installations as standard. This means that declaring that you now have solar panels often won’t affect your premiums, but please do check your policy terms and conditions or contact your provider ahead of your installation to be sure.

What happens when I sell my home after installing Solar?2025-01-21T14:44:58+00:00

Ownership of the technology is linked to the site and therefore in the case where a building or homeownership changes, the ownership of the technology would also transfer to the new owner.

How does our referral scheme work?2025-01-21T14:42:41+00:00

For every customer that you introduce that continues forward with an installation of either a Solar PV or Solar PV and Battery solution we will pay you £100 as a thank you for your recommendation.
